We're excited to have author Robert J. Mueller, battlefield traveler and author of "Fields of War:  Fifty Key Battlefields in France and Belgium" present a program at our library on the forgotten men of the Battle of the Bulge on Wednesday, November 6 at 7 pm.  Copies of his book will be on sale after his presentation. Please join us!

Don't forget our ever-popular cook, Chef Kate Bradley,  is coming to our library on Wednesday, November 13 at 7 pm.  She will give us recipes and tastings from the slow cooker.  The class menu includes hot crab, artichoke dip, Italian chicken, traditional stuffing outside the turkey, apricot pork roast and bread pudding.

John Hojek will teach a Beginning Email class on Friday  November 15 from 10 am to 2 pm. Registration must be made in-person at the Information Desk with a valid AMPL library card or ID. There is a $15 non-refundable registration fee for library district residents and $25 for non-residents.

New Registration System

Arrr, Matey! September 19th is Talk Like a Pirate Day!

Is learnin' t' talk like a pirate on your list o' thin's t' do? Well this be your lucky day! Mango Languages, one of the many treasures offered by the Library, is offering a Pirate-speak course. Mango also offers courses in many other languages. Pull out your Alsip-Merrionette Park Library card and give it a try!

Just around the corner: September 19th be International Talk Like a Pirate Day. So thar's no better time t' enjoy the all-time Mango favorite: THE PIRATE COURSE.

2013 Summer Reading Raffle Winners

eBook Training and Food & Book Supply Drive

Is downloading books to your Kindle still a struggle?  Is the Kindle you got for Christmas still sitting in the box?  Come into the library to get some help using My Media Mall so you can download free books.  Once you learn how to do it, it's not as intimidating as you may think!  We're offering one-on-one Kindle training from 2 to 4:00 on Tuesdays in July.  Just stop in at the Information Desk.

The Library is sponsoring a Food and School Supply Drive to benefit area residents.  If you wish to participate, drop off your non-perishable food and/or school supplies to the library by Saturday, August 17th.

Summer Reading 2013

Summer Reading Program: Have Book, Will Travel 
Patrons of all ages are invited to come read with us this summer and win prizes! Sign-up begins on Saturday, June 8th for Alsip-Merrionette Park Library residents. Kids are invited to get a free face-painting between 9:30 AM and 4:30 PM. Details about the Youth Services program are available below, and also on the library's website. Non-resident youth are invited to start signing up on Saturday, June 15th.

The first 75 High School students and adults will also get gifts for signing up on June 8th, and will be entered in a raffle for a prize.

Open Sundays but Closed for Easter

The Alsip-Merrionette Park Library is now open on Sundays from 12-4, from September through May. We are closed today, March 31, in observance of the Easter holiday. We will be open again on Monday, April 1 at 9AM. See you then! Have a wonderful day.

Dr. Seuss's Birthday Part at Our Grand Opening

The Youth Services Department dressed in "Cat in the Hat" costumes to celebrate Dr. Seuss's bday and the library's grand opening on March 3rd.  Come see their fun new lower-level facility, including a play kitchen, boat and puppet stage.  Check the library's online photo album for additional pictures of the grand opening and new building:

Now Open on Sundays

The Alsip-Merrionette Park Library staff members are happy to be back at 11960 S. Pulaski. We are now open on Sundays from 12-4 PM. Come see our beautiful building then, or during our regular hours of 9-9 on Monday-Thursday, and 9-5 on Friday and Saturday.

SWAN Catalog Down Next Week

The SWAN Catalog will be down from 7PM on Monday, February 25 through Tuesday, February 26. The online catalog will not be functional during this period. You can still check out books, but our staff is going to be using a backup system. We will not be able to check books in, review account information, or issue/renew library cards. We apologize for the inconvenience.

If You See "Ready for Pickup" . . . .

If you have requested library materials, you may now see the message "READY FOR PICKUP" in the SWAN catalog. This means that the materials will be ready for you on Monday, February 25th. Library "elves" are still very busy preparing the library, and we will not be open until then. We apologize for the delay.

The library's drive-through BOOK DROP is now open for business. You'll see separate slots for adult print materials, youth print, and media. The library building itself won't be open until Monday, Feb 25th at 9am.

In the Process of Moving

The library is closed right now while we are in the process of moving. The following libraries will assist Alsip-Merrionette Park Library patrons during the move: Oak Lawn, Blue Island, Palos Heights, Chicago Ridge, and Midlothian. Blue Island and Palos Heights offer free Internet access to all suburban library card holders.

All Alsip-Merrionette Park Library items are now due on March 11th, including items that previously showed a due date of February 4th. (Items requested from and owned by other libraries are due on the date shown on the receipt or tag, and must be returned to a suburban library by that date.) Check your account on SWAN to verify due dates:

Express Pickup service has been temporarily suspended during the move and transition.

Online holds cannot be placed until the library reopens on February 25th. We apologize for any inconvenience.

News About the Move

Happy New Year! For the month of January, the library will be open at our temporary facility at 12838 S. Cicero. We have lots of new books, and kids can still do a craft each day! Come see us soon. All materials will have a due date of March 11th. Help us by checking out materials so that we don't have to move them!

 Our last day here on Cicero will be February 2nd, and we will close while we move everything back to our beautifully renovated building at 11960 S. Pulaski. We will reopen on Pulaski on February 25, if all goes well. Hope to see you soon!
